‘CHROMA’

Chroma Live Performance for NYC ART MOVEMENT Exhibition

Description:

Chroma Live Performance, is a structure-conducted improvisation that involves signals, music and dance ques and personal-artistic choices from dancers. In advance, I structured the dance piece based on the theme, assigning to each dancer: music, improvisation theme, color and part of NYC ART MOVEMENT manifesto. The dancers have set structure to follow and ques to listen to; but about the quality of the movements and technique, all is credit of the featuring artists-dancers.

Theme:

“The world is my representation or idea. And here ‘nature’ does not mean a sum of experiences with respect to colors, but it is to be found in the concept of color” — Aphorism 125, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Remarks on Color, 1992.

In “The Theory of Colors” defined by Wolfgang Von Goethe (1810), we learn that it is not the white light that comes from the superimposition of the colors, but the opposite; the colors are not “primary”, but consist in a dimming of light, or in its interaction with darkness. This theory is going against Newton who affirm the color is the creation of the first interaction of the light meeting the darkness. This defines that from darkness, progressively the quantity of light is going to define colors and tonality of colors.

Objective:

Starting from the Theory of Colors of Goethe, I really found inspiring how those concepts can be metaphors of the colors of the universe: the seven spiritual colors of the seven Chakra that originate The Universe and it’s balance. It refers to energy centers spinning within the core of your system—your inner energy. These swirling wheels of universal energy align along the spine connecting your mind and physical and spiritual forms. These can be associated with body organs, levels of consciousness, natural elements, individual colors, and more.

Starting from the Theory of Colors, evolving to the different quality and meaning of each color/chakra, this last one can be associated with the different quality of each artwork and artist. The colors are different and read differently from everyone like it is for each artwork.

Different colors, different artistic points of view, widen the palette of options, making art full of variants and colorful.

MANIFESTO NYC ART MOVEMENT:

WHO WE ARE?

WE WISH TO TAKE PART IN FORWARD MOVING INITIATIVES WHICH IMPROVE UPON THE DIALOG OF ART AND ART HISTORY.

WE ARE HERE TO DEVELOP A NEW SYSTEM THROUGH THE ENERGY EXCHANGE AND MUTUAL SUPPORT.

WE ARE NOT AN ART GALLERY AND OUR ART SHOWS CAN TAKE PLACE ANYWHERE. WE ARE DECENTRALIZED AND EXPRESS OURSELVES THROUGH ANY MEDIUM OF ART.

WE ARE NOT HERE TO BE LABELED, WE ARE HERE TO MANIFEST THE ENERGY OF LIFE INTO MATERIAL WORLD AND MAKE IT CONTAGIOUS!

In both theories, we see how the main two opposite colors of the spectrum that appears are the blue (cold tone) and red (warm tone), but the interesting point of separation between the Theory of Color of Goethe and Newton is that in the Goethe’s one the primary colors does not exist.

This defines that from darkness, progressively the quantity of light is going to define colors and tonality of colors. The main two are red and blue, and from them those two are going to define the warm and cold colors of the spectrum.

Objective:

Starting from the Theory of Colors of Goethe, I really found inspiring how those concepts can be metaphors of the Creation we know in Greek mythology. Everything is darkness, and a frame of light defines the creation of all the living creatures. Not by chance, the Theory of Colors of Goethe is based on the studies of Aristoteles, one of the most relevant Ancient Greek Philosophers. And, not by chance, the two colors that define the origin of all the spectrum are blue and red. In the history of symbolism of these two colors: red represents life, health, vigor, war, courage, anger, love, and religious fervor; blue representdepth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, heaven, and intelligence. Together they create Virtue, the biggest achievement of each human being. Oppositions: darkness and light, blue and red, balance and story of creation. Creation by colors. CREATION ἔτυμον, meaning “true sense or sense of a truth”. COLORS khronos, meaning ‘time.

In this project I found ingenious how the videography setting could reflect the theory previously mentioned. The darkness of the studio, how the light is designing the space, how it does reflect and shape objects/people. How the design of the light can create the world around us. And from this creation, red and blue were born, initiating the process of existence of colors in space.

What happens when light hits the darkness?

What happens when red and blue meet?

Philosophy of choreography:

The role of the body in this piece is being a subject of change, object of reflection of light and movement in space. Separate and independent subjects moving in space, the body helps to underline the research of light. How can the light illuminate the body in a perfect way emphasizing only the harmonious shapes? How can the light accommodate the movements of the body? It is a choreography, a conversation between light and body.

The introduction of materials in colors, brings up another element of the choreography. The body in space, black or white in opposition with the background, can represent the moment of creation. In the beginning, darkness and light were living separately, but it is the meeting of the two that determines the creation of the two symbolic colors: red and blue. Movement in space, dancing with material and light, the choreography is made to accentuate the work of the lights, moving with a soft, floaty, gentle, quality of movement; but in the same moment, firm, accentuate, imperial to symbolize the concreteness of the act of creation. With the introduction of the color, Sara dances the quality of each color’s material, evolving the concept when she mixes both together.

Execution Notes:

The study of the light was designed to underline the body and movement quality of Sara. The movement quality was determined after the study and definition of the concept and symbolism of each element. The choice of the colors and floaty quality of the material used for this dance video, was made after the research of the symbolism of each color and after reading the study of The Theory of Color of Goethe. The camera choices were made to accentuate the meaning of each element and movement choice.
